Hi folks,
Moving in a new direction today. […perhaps just a step in the direction that’s been forming] Anyway, the guild I belong to is having a textile exhibit, which I didn’t consider entering. The president spoke to me about it and told me that all mediums where welcomed – we just need to focus on textile like surfaces. Well, I’m off like an Atlas 5 rocket! A short trip to the fabric store and I have inspiration material aplenty… Perfect, as it takes me in the direction I wanted – away from my beloved potters wheel for a bit and toward larger, freer forms, into the world of sculpture.

Surprising that I’ve heard the same thing twice, in two days, from two different people.
That a decision I’ve made will create stress in my life.
Brickwall!

I never even consider, much less evaluate, how stressful a decision may be when I decide to proceed. I just decide what must be done and get on with it. Is assessing stress an artist thing? Don’t know. Does this mean that my life is really changing from business to artistic? If so, yippee.

As the oldest child, "businessperson", I just decide something must be done and start get it done. How stressful it may be never comes up for consideration or evaluation. It's not a priority.

At this point in my life, I'm starting to look at how my decisions have affected my life. How the stress of those decisions has affected my life. How I've dealt with the resulting stress - or not.

Fascinating journey.
textured dreams to one and all....
Maura

learning to fire the gas kiln

Gosh - more work to it than i thought!
Thank goodness our kiln goddess is exactly that - and with plenty of patience.
It's like making a new friend. Akward. Edgy. Eager. Excited. ... all at once.
got a few pieces in this firing - can't wait to see how they came out. Especially the second batch of jon Singer's 'new rutile blue'. Not sure how Jon wants to refer it but it's the one from his tea cup. Image was shown back in November. When the bowls come out, I'll bravely post some images.
i have two old, cone 6, electric kilns here at my new studio. Waiting for the electrician to get the right connection. Meanwhile, I'm loving playing with cone 10 glazes. Several test tiles are in this firing too. I'm worried that ^6 ox won't give me any of the life I so love in ^10 glazes. One note in Jon's posting mentioned ^9 ox - so I still have faith.
Starting to rain. Our poor hills will probably run to the sea if this keeps up.
keep the faith
Maura

    <lj:music>something from BBC radio 1 - she's fun</lj:music>

Hi,
Well, I've found my way back into the journal.
Silly me.

The holidays were great - cold snowy New England - though it was warmer than it is now! We took my 9-year-old nephew to NYC. Now that was fun. The guys bought a chess set. Imagine, two shops, side by side, each specializing in chess sets. Wonderful choices: bronze, brass, iron; plastic - ancient, futuristic. My favorite? Some fake metal but the original work was excellent: carved animal heads of endangered species from Africa. Too rich for my blood but just looking at the pieces took me to another place.

Tried to get into MOMA - the lines were never-ending. Had to settle for a stop around the corner at the library’s lions.

Washington D.C.'s new American Indian Museum is fantastic. The architecture is breathtaking. They've used slate to imitate a wet-river bed, slowing, gently dipping down to the street. Such finesse.

Maura

Morning all,
Found this site while surfing last night. New morning, new beginnings, new friends.

In this reiteration of myself, I'm fashioning myself into a potter. Early steps of one anyway. It comes with all the excitement of discovery as ideas, people, techniques and work come together. I reached out for help to several people on-line. I'm overwhelmed with the helpfulness that I've received. The web is a wonderful 'world'.

If you haven't found ClayArt they are a great resource for potters: http://potters.org/categories.htm

Love and peace,
Maura
